What is Hysterosalpingography?
Hysterosalpingography, also known as uterosalpingography, is an x-ray examination of a woman’s uterus and fallopian tubes. This procedure uses fluoroscopy, a special x-ray technique that provides real-time imaging of internal organs in motion, combined with a water-soluble contrast material to visualize the uterus and fallopian tubes.
By filling these structures with the contrast material, the radiologist can assess their anatomy and function during the procedure.
Why Should I Do It?
Hysterosalpingography is a valuable diagnostic tool for evaluating:
- Recurrent Miscarriages:
- Identifies congenital or acquired abnormalities of the uterus, such as: Tumor masses, Adhesions, Uterine fibroids.
- Fallopian Tube Evaluation:
- Assesses whether the fallopian tubes are open or blocked.
- Monitors the effects of tubal surgery, including:
- Blockage caused by infection or scarring.
- The success of tubal ligation (sterilization) or reversal procedures.
- The reopening of tubes after disease-related blockage.
Preparation Guidelines
- Timing:
- The procedure is typically scheduled one week after menstruation but before ovulation to ensure you are not pregnant.
- Pre-existing Conditions:
- Inform your doctor if you have:
- An active inflammatory condition.
- A chronic pelvic infection or untreated sexually transmitted disease.
- Medications and Discomfort Management:
- Your doctor may recommend a laxative or enema to clear your bowels before the procedure.
- You may be prescribed a mild sedative or over-the-counter medication to minimize discomfort.
- Notify your physician of any medications you are taking or allergies, particularly to barium or iodinated contrast materials.
- Clothing and Accessories:
- You may need to remove some or all clothing and wear a gown.
- Remove jewelry, removable dental appliances, eyeglasses, or any metal objects that could interfere with imaging.
- Pregnancy Precaution:
- Always inform your doctor or the x-ray technologist if there is any possibility that you are pregnant.
