What is it?
Ultrasound imaging, or sonography, uses a small probe and ultrasound gel to produce images of the body’s internal structures using high-frequency sound waves. It is safe, painless, and does not use ionizing radiation.
Why is it Performed?
- Diagnosis of Abnormalities:
- To evaluate lumps or abnormalities detected during a physical exam.
- To investigate symptoms like spontaneous clear or bloody nipple discharge.
- Assessment of Lesions:
- Doppler ultrasound can check the blood supply in breast lesions, providing additional information about the nature of the abnormality.
Preparation Guidelines
- Clothing:
- You will need to undress from the waist up and wear a gown provided during the procedure.
