Lower Extremities

In medicine, the lower extremity is called the leg. The leg starts at the buttocks and hip and runs through the thigh, knee joint, lower leg, ankle joint to the foot. The leg consists of numerous bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and blood and lymph vessels. All these structures can become conspicuous due to injuries, incorrect strain, inflammations and tumors. Depending on the supposed cause of the symptoms, ultrasound examinations, X-rays, scintigraphies, magnetic resonance tomographies or computer tomographies of individual structures are made (e.g. MR knee joint, X-ray forefoot, CT ankle joint, skeletal scintigraphy with SPECT/CT).

Forefoot

Diagnosis of Forefoot Pain at RadCare Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
The forefoot is a sensitive area that bears a significant portion of the body weight during movement. In cases of chronic or acute pain in this area, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the best choice for accurately diagnosing the condition and identifying the underlying causes.
Common Causes of Forefoot Pain:
  1. Overloading:
    • Occurs due to excessive load on the forefoot during daily activities or sports.
  2. Improper Stress:
    • Results from improper movement techniques, such as long-distance running or intensive dancing.
  3. Sports Injuries:
    • Common among runners, marathoners, and even ballet dancers, where the forefoot experiences repeated pressure leading to inflammation or injury.
The Role of MRI in Diagnosis:
  1. High-Resolution Images:
    • MRI provides detailed images of bones, soft tissues, ligaments, and tendons.
  2. Precise Injury Detection:
    • Helps detect tendon inflammations, bruises, small fractures, or swelling.
  3. Accurate Treatment Plan:
    • Supports doctors in formulating a targeted treatment plan based on the detailed diagnosis.
When is MRI Recommended?
  • When there is persistent or recurring pain in the forefoot.
  • If the pain is accompanied by swelling or difficulty in movement.
  • When there is suspicion of subtle injuries that cannot be detected with traditional X-rays.
