Instructions and Guidelines for Preparing Medical Tests
Lipid Profile
- Fasting for 10-12 hours is required before the test.
- For a full lipid profile combined with fasting blood sugar, fasting for exactly 10 hours is necessary, with complete abstinence from food and smoking. Drinking water and taking prescribed medications are allowed.
Fasting Blood Sugar
- Fasting for 6-8 hours is required before the test.
- Drinking water and taking prescribed medications are allowed, with abstinence from food and smoking.
- For a full lipid profile combined with fasting blood sugar, fasting for exactly 10 hours is necessary.
Two-Hour Postprandial Blood Sugar
- The two-hour countdown begins from the start of eating.
- The meal must be finished within 10 minutes.
- If the patient is taking diabetes medication, they should continue unless otherwise instructed by the doctor.
- Only water is allowed during the two-hour period.
Glucose Tolerance Test
- The patient should visit the lab in the morning after fasting for 12 hours.
- Smoking is strictly prohibited during the test.
- A fasting blood sample is collected first, followed by a glucose dose prepared by the lab.
- Samples are collected one hour and two hours later (three hours for pregnant women).
Tuberculosis (TB) Urine Test
- Collect a morning urine sample for three consecutive days.
- Samples can be stored in the refrigerator until all are collected or sent to the lab individually after collection.
24-Hour Urine Collection
- Empty the bladder completely into the toilet, noting the time.
- Collect all urine in a clean, dry container for the next 24 hours, ending at the same time recorded initially.
- Keep the urine refrigerated until it is delivered to the lab.
Pregnancy Test (Urine)
- Early morning urine is preferred.
- Reduce fluid intake the evening before the test.
- A blood pregnancy test is more accurate than a urine test.
Urine Culture
- Wash hands and genital area with soap and water before collection.
- For women, separate the labia during collection.
- Discard the first part of the urine, collect the middle part in the sterile container provided by the lab, and discard the last part.
- Avoid antibiotics for 48 hours before the test unless directed by the doctor.
- If collected at home, the sample must reach the lab within two hours.
Throat Swab
- Fasting for 8 hours is required.
- Avoid antibiotics for 48 hours and refrain from using mouthwashes or throat antiseptics for 8 hours before the swab.
Sputum Sample for TB
- Collect three samples on three consecutive mornings.
- Samples can be refrigerated until all are collected or sent to the lab individually.
Semen Analysis
- Abstain from sexual activity or ejaculation for 3-5 days before the test.
- If collected at home, the sample must be delivered to the lab within 20 minutes.
Prostate Culture
- Avoid antibiotics for 48 hours before the test.
- Abstain from sexual activity for 3-5 days before the test.
- Avoid urination for one hour before the sample is collected.
Stool Culture
- Stop antibiotics for 48 hours before the test.
- Collect the sample in a clean, dry container and deliver it to the lab within one hour.
- Samples mixed with water, soap, or urine are not accepted.
Occult Blood in Stool
- Avoid red meat, liver, radishes, and certain medications (aspirin, iron, and vitamin C) for 48 hours.
- Avoid laxatives or any other medications unless directed by the doctor.
Iron Test
- Fasting for 6-8 hours is required before the test.
- Blood samples are collected in the morning, preferably after menstruation (for women), and before starting iron supplements.
